Before you start

What you'll need for a permanent, professional bond.

Heat press (recommended) 15"x15" or larger, with adjustable temperature and timer. Browse PRESSDO presses →
Household iron (backup) Without steam. Set to "Cotton" or maximum dry heat.
Pressing surface Firm, heat-resistant. No carpet or padding.
Teflon or parchment sheet Required for top protection during press.
Garment thermometer (optional) Many presses read incorrectly — verify the actual surface temperature.
Weeder & spatula For HTV — remove excess vinyl before pressing. Browse tools →

Do not over-press Foil/Metallic — they dull. Do not crush 3D Puff — use light pressure only.

Cold peel only. Wait until garment is room temperature, then peel slowly. Re-press 5 sec with Teflon for adhesive lock.

Step-by-step application

Same process for rhinestones, HTV, and DTF — just match the temp/time to your material.

Pre-press the garment

3–5 seconds at your target temperature to remove moisture and wrinkles. Moisture is the #1 reason transfers don't bond.

Position the transfer

Place on the cooled garment in the exact location.

  • Rhinestones: clear carrier tape UP, stones DOWN
  • HTV: shiny carrier UP, vinyl DOWN
  • DTF: printed side DOWN

Cover with Teflon

A Teflon sheet or parchment paper protects both the transfer and your press platen from direct contact.

Press at the right specs

Match the temperature, time, and pressure for your transfer + fabric from the chart above. Use a thermometer to verify actual platen temperature.

Cool and peel correctly

The peel method depends on transfer type.

  • Rhinestones: warm peel — wait 10 sec, peel diagonally
  • HTV: check packaging — warm or cold peel
  • DTF: cold peel — wait until room temperature

Final lock-down press

Cover with Teflon and press 5 more seconds. This locks the adhesive into the fabric weave for long-term durability.

⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pressing too long — stones scorch, vinyl edges over-melt
  • Pressing too light — adhesive doesn't bond, edges lift after first wash
  • Skipping the pre-press — moisture weakens the bond significantly
  • Stretching the garment during application — distorts the design permanently
  • Washing within 24 hours — full adhesive cure needs 24 hours minimum

✓ Care instructions for finished garments

  • Wash inside-out, cold water, gentle cycle
  • Dry low or hang to dry
  • Never iron directly on rhinestones, HTV, or DTF
  • Avoid bleach, fabric softener, and dry cleaning
  • For folded storage, place tissue paper between design layers

Troubleshooting

If something goes wrong — here's how to diagnose.

The transfer didn't bond — edges are lifting
Pressure was too light or time too short. Re-press 5–8 extra seconds at the same temp, then check. Always confirm your platen reads accurate — many presses run 20°F low.
Stones scorched or vinyl turned dark
Temperature too high or time too long. Drop temp by 15°F and re-test on a scrap. For nylon, spandex, and sublimated polyester always use the lower-temp settings in the chart.
The design isn't where I wanted it
Use a heat-resistant tape or alignment ruler before pressing. Once pressed, the transfer is permanent — practice positioning on inside seam first.
3D Puff HTV crushed flat
Too much pressure. 3D Puff needs light pressure only. Use lowest pressure setting and shorter time.
The carrier won't peel off cleanly
Either peeled too early (warm-peel materials need a few seconds) or too late (cold-peel left on too long). Check the chart and re-press for 5 seconds if needed.
I don't have a heat press — can I use an iron?
Yes, but with limitations. Use a dry iron at max cotton setting, firm pressure, 25–30 seconds. Press in sections for larger designs. Results are less consistent than a heat press, especially for rhinestones and 3D Puff. See Equipment Hub → for our PRESSDO heat press options.
